Question 3

What have you learned from your audience feedback?

Learning more about the target audience we were aiming for was a key aspect during research, we wanted to tailor some of our initial ideas based around the ideas and preferences of the viewers. When getting 30 people to taking my questionnaire, one of the questions ask what their favourite genre is, with the first being social realism, and the second being thriller. I knew that when making my social realism short film that I wanted to add aspects from another genre as I have seen in most of the successful films, they mix two together. By the audience letting me know this in the results, it helped me to learn how I could make even more people drawn in to the film by mixing two different genres audiences together. With there being a correlation between the age of the person taking the questionnaire and the genre they choose as their favourite, i researched the answers to the questionnaire and it is only the younger people that prefer social realism, with the ages between  16-21 being the age of people I am aiming for anyway, I learn that by choosing the genre and co-genre I have chosen it allows me to make a film that draws in my audience.

Another question I asked was about what generic conventions that the audience expect to see in a social realism film, and see if they match the conventions I have already planned to use in the storyline. Some of the most well know conventions included the relatability of the storyline and dramatic individual stories. From this I understand that when i created the script and the storyboards that each of the here characters had to have good clear stories for the audience to both like. Finding an audience is a key fact in the making of a film, I need to know who my target audience are going to be and research into them before I start production because I wanted it to be something they will enjoy. Although that sounds like it could have been predictable, myself and my team had to sit together and create the characters stores in a creative way.

In the social realism film that I have seen, they take the mood of the film in two different ways, it is either a humorous atmosphere or a serious. Such as with ‘four lions’ it has a very humorous attitude to it, where as another like kidulthood has a serious vibe to it. So I asked my audience which they preferred as this is an important part of the screenwriting. So I learned by the answer: which was serious. I learned that the audience prefer the tenseness of the scene and aggression like in kidulthood.
